Energy & Water Goals and Actions for UNCG
Implement a UNCG Energy and Water Recommendations and Guidelines Document (See previous)
Reduce total energy consumption by 4% per year
Recommend an energy conservation budget in major campus Repair & Renovation (R&R) funding
Replace incandescent and T-12 fluorescent lighting with T-8 and electronic ballasts
Install exit signs that employ light-emitting diode technology in parking garages
Install Variable Frequency Drives (VFD) on motors in Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) Systems
Install automatic flush and low-flush toilets and urinals
Explore greater use of rainwater and gray water for irrigation, toilet flushing, etc.
Recommend that units and departments assign an Energy MonitorÑperhaps the Building Managers can fulfill this role; they could be responsible for promoting energy awareness within the department and ensuring that lights are turned off at the end of the academic day. Any unresolved heating/ cooling problems of department or unit the Energy Monitor could report to Facilities Operations. The Energy Monitor could leave an energy conservation note in all offices where lights have been left on.
Work with Facilities Operations and Office of Waste Reduction and Recycling on green games awards
Explore energy management system for Spring Garden Apartments
Ensure electric water heaters that are used as back-up are not energized when not in use
Institute a scheduled electric and water meter calibration/replacement schedule
Incorporate sustainable design into all up coming projects such as North and South Spencer bathroom renovations
Install occupancy sensors for offices and classrooms
Install night setback for HVAC Systems for offices and classroom buildings
Install automatic lighting turn off controls for offices and classroom buildings
Recommend IT Policy for energy management and conservation or computers campus-wide
Install in all buildings sub-meters that the campus reads and obtain computer equipment/programs that are electronically read and inputted into the database
Meter the several buildings that have multiple power feeds
Establish methods and meter buildings to monitor the steam and chilled water
Explore greater use of solar and other alternative energy sources
Install PV solar panels—passive and active systems—on UNCG flat roof buildings, Spring Garden Apartments, Tower Village, Graham, McIver, Library Stacks, etc, for water heating, running IT and computers, and/or general electrical needs
Set air conditioning levels to 74-76 degrees F for cooling; 68-70 degrees F for heating), see UNC-Asheville Energy Policy for specific area needs, e.g. library, computer centers, seasonal changes, holidays, etc. (Individual zone or office temperature control, occupants may be able to override the schedule to provide heating/cooling for their office at any time)
