The Office of Safety has long been working with many groups on campus to make UNCG safer, healthier and more sustainable. Their primary areas of focus include chemical & laboratory safety, occupational safety, environmental health, radiation safety, fire safety, biological safety, emergency management and hazardous waste management. As the university continues to grow, so will the emphasis on these important issues.

The Health & Safety working group has developed its own goals and hopes to implement them, while assisting the efforts of the Office of Safety, by highlighting best practices and identifying opportunities for improvement. UNCG’s achievements in the area of Health & Safety include:

  • A chemical waste minimization program, which reduces the amount or necessity of hazardous chemicals in experiments
  • Purchasing nontoxic or less toxic cleaning products, streamlining chemical use and continually tracking chemical inventories
  • The recent addition of a second Industrial Hygienist

Health & Safety Recommendations

  • Increase awareness of current Health & Safety sustainability efforts
  • Consider security as a component of the Health & Safety effort
  • Bring to the forefront concerns about chemical use and its impacts - particularly for non-traditional users
  • Review all new chemicals and their intended uses
  • Develop policies on purchasing safer chemical products (Green Seal, low VOC, etc)
